Celebrity Beauty Breakdown - Candace Cameron Bure
Welcome to Facing Forty’s Celebrity Beauty Breakdown Series!
As a beauty product junkie, I love a good beauty breakdown. The red carpet pre-show is my favorite part of awards season. I love a glamorous moment, but it is not real life. Like you, I want to know how I can make myself look my best in everyday life. I created the Celebrity Beauty Breakdown series to bridge the gap of beauty advice that real forty-something women seek with the makeup pros who consistently work with these beautiful women.
Let me introduce you to Nicole Elle King, a celebrity make-up artist and founder of Get-Uplifted, a wellness community. One of Nicole’s clients is the ageless Candace Cameron Bure, whom we all grew up watching on Full House, and now your kids watch her on Fuller House. Can you believe that DJ Tanner is 44 years old? Candace looks amazing! Today Nicole takes us behind the scenes and breaks down the makeup look she created for Candace’s Good Housekeeping magazine cover. As you can see from the gorgeous images, Candace’s makeup is polished yet natural, which looks great for work, a party, or brunch with your besties. Here’s hoping our social lives will resume in 2021!
hydrate & Glow
To start, Nicole uses NARS Multi-Action Hydrating Toner to gently exfoliate Candace’s skin and remove any traces of makeup or excess moisturizer.
Candace is a brand ambassador for the Lancer Skincare line created by celebrity dermatologist Dr. Harold Lancer. You can watch her on QVC, professing her love for his life-changing products. Nicole’s final skincare step was to prep Candace’s lips with La Mer The Lip Balm.
eyes before face - the great debate
Just like the philosophical debate of what came first - the chicken or the egg, makeup artists and influencers have long debated over what to apply first - eye makeup or foundation. There is no right or wrong answer. I tend to flip flop back and forth depending on the makeup look.
Nicole prefers to start with eye makeup first. According to Nicole, “I usually let the skincare work its magic. I like to let the skin breathe for as long as possible, taking the time for the skincare products to work.”
prime & shade
“When I work with Candace, our workdays are long because her schedule is so busy while she is in NYC. I need her eye makeup to last all day. I start by using NARS Tinted Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base in Light,” says Nicole.
Nicole applied a warm matte peachy eyeshadow as a base from lid to crease. Next, she used one of her favorite eyeshadow palettes, The Icon Palette by Charlotte Tilbury. According to Nicole, “the palette is designed to provide four eye makeup looks, Day, Date, Diva, and Disco.” She used the soft shimmery cream eyeshadow from the Day look on Candace’s brow bone and inner corner of the eyes. The rose gold shade, the second shade in the Day look, was applied all over her lid. Nicole used the warm bronzy shade, the Date look’s second eyeshadow, in Candace’s crease to create depth and a natural smokiness to the eye. She also used this shade under the bottom lash. “I really love this eyeshadow combo because it makes Candace’s blue eyes pop,” raves Nicole. We can all agree that Candace’s eyes are one of her standout features.
To define Candace’s upper lash line, Nicole used MAC’s Gel Eyeliner in Blacktrack. “I love the longevity of gel eyeliner,” says Nicole. “I prefer a soft blended line instead of a sharp line.” Nicole’s trick to soften the line is to take an angled eyeliner brush and buff it into Candace’s lash line.
give me lashes
Once lashes are curled, Nicole applied her favorite mascara, L’Oreal Voluminous Waterproof Mascara in Carbon Black, to Candace’s lashes. This mascara is a staple in most pro makeup artist’s kits, including mine. “I like this mascara because it doesn’t clump and really separates and lifts each lash,” says Nicole. Next, she applied Ardell Individual Lashes in Medium Black using DUO Lash Adhesive in Dark Tone. Per Nicole, “I love using individual lashes instead of a strip lash for a soft natural look.”
Real brows, not instagram brows
According to Nicole, “the GH shoot was all about a soft natural glam for Candace.” “I subtly enhanced Candace’s brows. I filled them in with the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Soft Brown. My trick for fluffy, full brows is to use tiny strokes to mimic the look of natural brow hair. I used the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Gel in Clear to keep her brow shape in place and polished throughout the shoot.”
face time
Nicole explained how she created a natural-looking complexion with foundation in this related post. Here are the products she used on the photoshoot.
Chanel Ultra Le Teint Velvet Foundation in shades 30 & 40 to highlight the center of Candace’s face and shades 50 & 60 on the outer perimeter of her face.
NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Custard and Ginger for under-eye coverage
Givenchy Teint Couture Eyewear Concealer in shades 16 & 20 to brighten undereyes
Makeup Forever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Stick Foundation in shade Y505 (Cognac) to contour Candace’s forehead and cheekbones
love to blush
“I love cream blush,” raves Nicole. She warns, “Don’t be afraid of bright-colored cream blushes. Cream blushes melt into the skin and give you the most natural-looking flush of color.” Nicole used a shade called Twilight Rose from Stila’s Lip Cheek Palette in Sunset Serenade. Unfortunately, this palette has been discontinued. I recommend RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek in Beloved, which is a similar color. She applied NARS Pressed Powder in Heat to set Candace’s contour and add more warmth to her skin.
pop of color
“Candace and I both love a bright lip. Since we were shooting a springtime cover, we went for it,” says Nicole. “I created a custom shade of red that was bright but wearable for daytime. I made her lip color using NARS Audacious Lipstick in shades Lana, Carmen, and Rita. I applied Lana, which is a vibrant orangey-red, all over her lips. Next, I mixed Carmen and Rita together, which are deeper red shades. I layered them on top of the Lana shade. The deeper red tones made Candace’s blue eyes pop. The trick in pulling off a custom lip shade is to mix the shades on a makeup palette or the back of your hand (if applying to yourself) and then apply it with a lip brush.”
